Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Exercise
Research has shown that exercise can improve health and other challenges with ASD, including: attention/on-task behavior, language development and school performance!
An ASD study revealed that just 10 min of low intensity exercise showed reduction in echolalia (repeating others' words/sentences), and stimming behaviors!
3 Key Evidenced-Based Practice Tips:
1) Use visuals - pictures, written words, visual schedules, checklists and video modeling.
2) Add exercise to routine - thoughtfully integrate exercise into daily/weekly routine. Even one time per week is beneficial.
3) Reinforcement for success - Focus on persistence over perfection. Make it a positive experience. Start slow and simply move.
Example: 8-10 min of aerobic activity followed by 1-2 exercises for muscular strength/flexibility. Gradually increase time or repetitions. Use verbal praise and positive reinforcement.
