PMC ALL STAR: Derek!

Meet Derek!

Derek, a friend at PMC, has made amazing progress towards improving his quality of play as well as enjoying sensory play- on a swing, with water beads, & moving through obstacle courses. Derek has learned to play with a large variety of toys including:


Stacking blocks

Completing shape puzzles

Bowling.


He has also learned to explore the sensory gym & return to therapist led play. Derek is even starting to gain other skills, such as taking off socks & shoes. Derek continues to amaze us each day as he overcomes fears, learns new skills, & makes progress towards his goals. Derek also makes us all smile with his playful laugh. Way to go Derek! 


Why is Play so Important?

Play is essential to a child’s learning and development. Functional play is when a child uses a toy for an intended purpose, such as rolling a ball & stacking blocks. Since play is the main occupation for children, developing play skills in kids is essential for learning new skills.

The Zones of Regulation consists of four colored zones: Blue, Green, Yellow and Red. Each zone provides a visual for different kinds of feelings and energy levels. Organizing emotions into four simple sections can be a helpful visual for children, allowing them to communicate their emotions by simply pointing to one of the color blocks that hold the emotions they are feeling.
