Recreation and recreational therapy, often known as "therapeutic recreation," offer transformative benefits in our lives, equipping individuals with new skills and confidence! In our recent recreational podcast episode, Tina sat down with Heather Lindsay to discuss some of the health and social benefits of recreation.
Heather Lindsay. Heather knew early-on that she wanted to help others. She earned her degree in Therapeutic Recreation from York College of PA. She is also a certified Personal Trainer, group Fitness Instructor, and Spin Instructor. Heather has worked in various healthcare settings over the last 15 years, ranging from inpatient/outpatient care for those with severe brain and spinal cord injuries, to working with the elderly in memory care. She previously served as the Assistant Director in a retirement village and helped to create a new adult daycare center. Heather is passionate about supporting and promoting wellness for individuals of all ages and abilities.
Recreation can take place in many forms, from organized sports activities, to peaceful walks, group activities to individual activities but all forms of recreation can give individuals, families and communities positive outcomes. Some of these benefits include: increase in life expectancy, mental health benefits, strengthening of community and promoting social bonds and connections.
What Does Recreational Therapy Look Like?
Recreational therapy offers personalized activities tailored to an individuals interests, exploring their unique strengths and weaknesses. Activities revolve around an individual and their own journey. Therapists work closely with participants (and often their families) to create customized plans based on individual needs and goals. Common results include reduced stress, increased confidence, skills, and community. Activities (ranging from arts and crafts to sports, nature exploration, music and more) are all designed to enhance lives in various was such as physical fitness, self-esteem, social interaction, and emotional healing. By customizing a recreational activity to each individuals unique needs, each person is empowered to overcome obstacles, develop life skills, and ultimately lead lives filled with purpose and joy
